If we are supposed to be the yeast, then we should also be active in this sphere, encouraging each other in a world that is often apathetic at best and hostile. Of course nothing beats the face-to-face encouragement from one's own community, when it's there! I’m a new-comer to the world of blogs (having started the above about a month ago); but I think they are a great way to share your thoughts, reflections and feelings. They are interesting, but also have enormous potential for time-wasting (particularly reading links & links of links etc!). I think at times, they can suffer from not being edited/selected in quite the same way books are, but that has its advantages too!
